About this work

I have always been an avid reader and film buff. I wasn't however aware of the term, 'steampunk' until I saw a film titled 'Mortal Engines'. Then I realized that other films that I really enjoyed, like 'Brazil 'and 'Howl's Moving Castle' had incorporated or precursed these themes. I found an old tatered copy of a 1937 book I had, titled 'The Importance of Living', so I decided to refurbish it and create my version of the cover using steampunk philosophy. One of the author's main themes was that there is limited time, so one should enjoy the simple explorations of life rather than chasing endless status and wealth. My take on this was to emphasise this 'time' aspect, so in steampunk fashion, I added gears, cogs, and a clock to create the bookcover. Early Victorian book covers relied primarily on symmetry, heavy frame-like borders, repetitive geometric patterns and a centralized motif relevant to the story. I simply replaced these features with steampunk elements.
