About this work

The Unwound Bride is a non-generative digital artwork set in an alternate Victorian world where steam technology has become part of everyday life—and even clothing. The woman at the centre is a seamstress who has spent years creating mechanical wedding dresses designed to control movement and bind women to the social order. She discovers that the same machinery shaping the dresses also powers the city’s enormous clockwork system. In secret, she creates one final dress: one designed to follow the human body rather than control it. In the moment depicted, she removes the final gear from the machine, bringing the system to a halt. The red thread connecting her sewing machine to the clock symbolizes the fate she has been taught to sew—and the freedom she chooses to redesign. Victorian fashion, brass mechanisms, steam technology and dramatic chiaroscuro build a Steampunk world where fabric and machinery become symbols of control and liberation.
